"Earlier this year, I had the privilege of organizing a geophysics workshop for the pupils of a British school as part of the “Future Ready Skills” series. This inspiring initiative aims to introduce children to various career paths and the essential skills required to pursue them.
Ironically, despite geoscience playing a critical role in addressing global challenges—such as climate change and the energy transition—the field has declined in students pursuing Earth sciences or careers as geoscience engineers.
The workshop was an incredible opportunity to spark curiosity and enthusiasm among young minds. I shared how geophysicists use cutting-edge technologies and scientific expertise to explore the subsurface, uncover new energy sources, and contribute to building a more sustainable world.
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the hands-on activity where the pupils planted seismic receivers in the school’s backyard, generated seismic waves by jumping on the ground, and had the chance to interpret it themselves. It was truly rewarding to see their excitement and curiosity come alive as they engaged with real-world geophysics tools and concepts.”
